The six nations sharing the Congo Basin have signed a historic agreement to jointly protect 250 million hectares of forest, establishing the Congo Basin Forest Partnership with a $10 billion endowment from international donors.
The DRC, Republic of Congo, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea signed the accord at a ceremony in Kinshasa.
The agreement establishes a joint monitoring system using satellite technology to detect illegal logging and agricultural encroachment in real time.
Conservationists described the signing as the most important forest protection agreement of the century.
