Egypt has launched a large-scale desert reclamation programme that aims to bring 4 million additional acres of desert land into agricultural production over the next decade.
The flagship project will use advanced drip irrigation technology, solar-powered pumping stations and drought-resistant seed varieties developed by Egyptian agricultural research institutes.
The programme is designed to reduce Egypt’s dependence on the Nile Delta for food production and create 1.5 million new agricultural jobs.
The World Food Programme and the Food and Agriculture Organisation have both pledged technical support for the initiative.
