Nigeria’s House of Representatives passed an amendment to the Cybercrime Act in a late-night plenary session that critics say was deliberately rushed to avoid public scrutiny.
The amendment, which expands the government’s powers to compel technology companies to hand over user data without court orders in national security cases, passed by 214 votes to 89.
Digital rights organisations immediately condemned the legislation, warning it could be weaponised to silence journalists and opposition activists.
Proponents argue the measure is necessary to combat the rising tide of cybercrime and terrorism financing that has cost Nigeria billions of naira in recent years. The bill now awaits presidential assent.
