Nigeria has become the first West African country to adopt a comprehensive national artificial intelligence policy framework, establishing governance principles and a regulatory sandbox for AI companies.
Minister of Communications and Digital Economy Bosun Tijani presented the framework at a ceremony in Abuja attended by tech industry leaders and international partners.
The policy establishes ethical principles for AI development including fairness, transparency, accountability and respect for Nigerian cultural values.
Global technology companies including Google, Microsoft and IBM praised the framework as balanced and forward-looking.
