African payments giant Flutterwave has closed a $500 million Series E funding round at a $5 billion valuation, becoming the continent’s most valuable private technology company.
The round was led by a consortium including Visa, Tiger Global and two sovereign wealth funds from the Middle East.
Flutterwave CEO Olugbenga Agboola said the capital would be deployed to accelerate expansion into new markets in East and North Africa.
The company processes over $26 billion in transactions annually across 34 African countries and has partnerships with more than 900,000 businesses.
