Nigeria’s crude oil production has climbed to 1.8 million barrels per day, the highest level in five years and a significant recovery from the nadir of 1.2 million barrels daily two years ago.
The improvement was driven by enhanced pipeline surveillance and a new community engagement programme that has significantly reduced theft in the Niger Delta.
The recovery in oil output, combined with global oil prices above $90 per barrel, has significantly improved Nigeria’s foreign exchange earnings.
Oil industry analysts said sustaining production above 1.8 million barrels would require accelerated investment in new deepwater assets.
