The South African government has unveiled plans for an $8 billion smart city development on the outskirts of Johannesburg that will house 500,000 residents and incorporate cutting-edge technology in urban planning and public services.
President Cyril Ramaphosa said the development would be built on 15,000 hectares of state land and powered entirely by renewable energy.
The city will feature driverless public transport, sensor-driven waste management, smart street lighting and ultra-high-speed fibre internet for every household.
Foreign investors from China, the UAE and Germany have already committed $3.2 billion to the first phase of development, with construction expected to begin within 18 months.
