Kenya and Ethiopia have signed a landmark energy cooperation agreement valued at $3.2 billion that will see the two countries share electricity generation and transmission infrastructure across their shared border.
The deal covers the construction of new high-voltage transmission lines, joint investment in geothermal and solar generation, and a coordinated approach to cross-border electricity trading.
Kenya, which has surplus renewable energy capacity, will initially export up to 400 megawatts to Ethiopia while the two countries develop joint generation infrastructure.
Energy analysts described the agreement as a model for African energy integration and a significant step toward the African Union’s goal of universal electricity access by 2030.
