Nigerian federal and state government officials spend an estimated N45 billion annually on private and chartered air travel, according to a Granite News investigation that analysed aviation records and procurement documents over three years.
We identified 14 state governments that spent more on executive air travel than on primary healthcare in their states. In three cases the air travel budget exceeded the combined education and health budget.
Procurement records showed contracts with aviation companies at rates between 40 and 200 percent above market rates.
The Fiscal Responsibility Commission says it is reviewing the findings and may refer specific cases to the EFCC.
