Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has announced a nationwide crackdown on cult groups following a wave of violence in Rivers State that claimed 23 lives in a single week.
The IG said the force had identified the six most active cult groups operating in Rivers State and was pursuing a strategy of targeted arrests, with 78 suspects already in custody.
Governor Siminalayi Fubara declared a dusk-to-dawn curfew in three local government areas and called on residents to provide information to police.
Human rights groups called for a comprehensive deradicalisation programme alongside law enforcement action.
