A Lagos High Court judge has ordered the full retrial of eight members of a kidnapping gang whose original conviction was thrown into doubt after defence lawyers presented CCTV footage suggesting a key prosecution witness had been coached.
Justice Chukwuemeka Nwosu declared a mistrial after reviewing footage showing the witness meeting with police officers in a hotel room three days before taking the stand.
Victims’ families expressed anguish at the prospect of a new trial, having already waited three years for justice.
The Director of Public Prosecutions has declined to comment on whether any officers will face misconduct charges in connection with the alleged witness coaching.
