Independence in 1960 came with promises. A united, prosperous, just federation. A country that would speak for Africa in the world. A democratic state governed by law rather than by power.
Sixty-six years later, it is worth sitting with the distance between the promise and the reality. Not as an exercise in despair, but as an act of honest reckoning. You cannot close a gap you refuse to measure.
And yet. The same Nigeria produces the most educated African diaspora in the world. It produces business empires, artistic giants, intellectual firebrands. Its civil society is tenacious. Its free press, under assault and underfunded, still speaks.
The Nigeria we were promised has not arrived. But the people capable of building it are here, and they are not leaving without a fight. That is not optimism. That is observation.
