A year-long investigation by Granite News has documented systematic human rights abuses in 23 Nigerian police detention facilities across six states, including torture, extrajudicial killings and prolonged unlawful detention.
Our investigation is based on testimony from 147 former detainees, 23 serving police officers who spoke on condition of anonymity, and forensic medical evidence of injuries consistent with torture.
In the most serious cases, we identified 12 individuals who died in police custody over 24 months under circumstances consistent with fatal beating.
Only two of the 12 deaths resulted in any form of investigation. Neither has resulted in a prosecution.
