At least 250,000 Nigerians die annually from diseases that should be treatable because the drugs they receive are counterfeit, substandard or entirely inactive, according to a Granite News investigation.
We purchased 45 commonly prescribed drugs from open markets and pharmacies across Lagos, Kano and Enugu and submitted them to an accredited laboratory. Twenty-seven of the 45 samples, 60 percent, failed quality testing.
The investigation followed fake pharmaceuticals from their point of manufacture in Asia through Nigeria’s porous borders into the hands of patients in public hospitals.
NAFDAC Director General Prof Mojisola Adeyeye acknowledged the scale of the problem and said the agency was seeking additional resources and legislation to address it.
